Photograms | Literary: FLIGHT
Photograms | Literary: FLIGHT encompasses photographer Wendy Paton’s most recent body of work. What began as an artistic vision, has given rise to a magnificent creation. Paton’s FLIGHT is a piece of art in itself – its accordion folded pages and soft touch film-laminated cover only add to the allure of the images within. Paton’s strikingly abstract gelatin silver images are the result of a centuries’ old photographic medium – the photogram.
These intricate and intriguing camera-less images are created in a traditional darkroom by placing 3-dimensional objects (in Paton’s case, books) directly onto a light-sensitive material. As with regular film photography, an enlarger is used, along with normal photochemical processes, to construct images – all without using a camera.
As true artists do, Wendy Paton creates her own language with FLIGHT – transforming simple literary objects into bold, artistic abstractions.
